Glossary

The definitive guide to technical proxy and networking terminology.

A

ASN
Autonomous System Number. Highlights the network operator (e.g., AT&T, Verizon) owning the IP ranges.
API
Application Programming Interface. Allows programmatic control over proxy rotation and account management.

B

Backconnect
A proxy configuration where you connect to a single entry node, which then routes your traffic through a rotating pool of residential or mobile IPs.
Bandwidth
The volume of data transferred through the proxy. Some plans are unmetered, others charge per GB.
Botting
Using automated scripts for tasks like sneaker copping, ticket buying, or social media management.

C

Concurrency
The number of simultaneous connections or requests you can make through the proxy service at one time.
Cookie
Small data packet stored by the browser, used for maintaining session state and tracking.

D

Datacenter Proxy
An IP provided by a cloud hosting service. Fast and cheap, but easier to detect than residential IPs.
Dedicated IP
An IP address exclusively assigned to a single user, ensuring no one else's activity affects its reputation.

E

Encryption
Encoding data to prevent unauthorized access, essential for secure HTTPS connections.

F

Fingerprint
Unique device characteristics (browser, OS, screen size) used by websites to track and identify users.

G

Geo-Targeting
Feature allowing selection of proxy IPs from specific countries, cities, or regions.
Gateway
The entry point server you connect to, which then forwards your request to the actual proxy IP.

H

HTTP(S) Proxy
A proxy designed specifically for web traffic, interpreting HTTP headers and requests. HTTPS adds SSL encryption.
Header
Metadata sent with an HTTP request containing info like User-Agent, Accept-Language, etc.

I

ISP Proxy
Also known as Static Residential. A datacenter-hosted IP registered under an ISP's ASN, combining speed and trust.
IP Whitelist
Security method allowing access to the proxy only from specific, pre-approved IP addresses.

L

Latency
The time delay (ping) for data to travel from your client to the proxy and then to the target.

M

Mobile Proxy
An IP address assigned to a mobile device (4G/5G) by a cellular carrier, offering high trust due to CGNAT.

P

Protocol
Standardized set of rules for data transmission (e.g., TCP, UDP, HTTP, SOCKS).
Pool
The total collection of available IP addresses in a proxy network.

R

Rotating IP
A proxy setup where the IP address changes automatically with every request or after a short interval, ideal for scraping.
Residential Proxy
An IP address assigned by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to a homeowner, heavily trusted by websites.
Rate Limit
Restriction by a target website on how many requests an IP can make in a given timeframe.

S

Sticky IP
A proxy session that maintains the same IP address for a set duration (e.g., 10 minutes), essential for tasks requiring login persistence.
SOCKS5
A versatile proxy protocol that supports TCP and UDP traffic, offering authentication and better performance for various tasks.
Subnet
A logical subdivision of an IP network. Proxies from the same subnet (e.g., /24) are often flagged together.
Shared IP
An IP address used simultaneously by multiple clients, cost-effective but with higher risk of bans.
Scraping
Automated extraction of data from websites. Proxies are crucial to bypass anti-bot measures.

T

Throttle
Intentional slowing of service speed by a provider or network to manage traffic load.
Thread
A single line of execution or connection. Multi-threaded software uses many proxies at once.

U

User:Pass Auth
Authentication method using a username and password to access the proxy server.
User-Agent
A text string identifying the browser and OS to the web server. Rotating it helps avoid bot detection.
Unlimited Data
A plan feature allowing unrestricted data usage, typically found in shared or mobile proxy services.
Uptime
The reliability metric indicating the percentage of time the proxy service is operational.

V

Verification
The process of confirming identity (KYC) often required before accessing high-quality proxy networks.
